Summary
Cammell Laird was formed when Laird, John, Son & Co. Of Birkenhead (1829) merged with Johnson Cammell & Co. of Sheffield at the beginning of the 20th century. The company was at the forefront of naval technology from its foundation, known for achieving many firsts, including the first screw driven vessel.
Before this merger, Laird and Co. had occupied the same site since their establishment and were well known as expert shipbuilders during the mid- and late-19th century.
