Summary
Laird John, Son & Co. was a shipbuilding company established by John Laird in 1829 in Birkenhead. The firm was renowned for their iron-clad ships, including the Rainbow (c. 1836), which at the time was the largest iron ship ever to be built. After John Laird retired in 1861 the company was continued by his three sons. At the beginning of the 20th century Laird John, Son & Co. merged with Johnson Cammell & Co. of Sheffield to form Cammell Laird.
