Vessel Nordenfelt Class Submarines (c. 1885 - )
- From
- c. 1885
Summary
Nordenfelt Class Submarines I-IV were four steam-powered submarines designed and constructed by Swedish engineer Thorsten Nordenfelt.
Nordenfelt I, built in Sweden 1884-85, was equipped with a single torpedo tube and machine gun. The torpedo mechanism was only operational while the vessel was surfaced, as the vessel shut down its engine to dive.
An advance was made in 1886 when the Nordenfelt II (Abdülhamid), one of two submarines Nordenfelt constructed for the Ottoman Navy, became the first submarine to fire a torpedo while submerged. The other submarine built for the Ottoman Navy was called Nordenfelt III (Abdülmecid).
Nordenfelt IV was equipped with dual engines and twin torpedo tubes and was built for the Russian Navy.
