Berliner Maschinenbau AG was founded by Louis Victor Robert Schwartzkopf, a Berlin based manufacturer of locomotives in October 1852 as EisengieBerei uno Maschinen-Fabrik von L. Schwartzkopf (Iron foundry and Engineering Works of L. Schwartzkopf).
In the late 1800s the firm was made infamous when they were accused of counterfeiting Robert Whitehead's patented torpedo design using stolen design drawings.
