Summary
The dreadnought is a type of heavy artillery battleship. It is named after the Royal Navy's HMS Dreadnought (1906) from which the style originated.
The HMS Dreadnought's all-big-gun fitout armament had such an impact on the world of naval warfare that all battleships constructed after this time began to be called dreadnoughts.
The dreadnought was the foremost style of battleship throughout the twentieth century.
