Summary

Peter Brotherhood was an engineer who pioneered steam engine technology. He was the son of Rowland Brotherhood, also an engineer.

In 1872 he officially introduced the Brotherhood Engine, a powerful three cylinder engine which could be powered by steam, water or compressed air. In the mid 1880s the Royal Navy began fitting all Whitehead torpedoes with these engines, resulting in an increase in speed from an average of 9 knots to 26 knots.
