Abstract

23 April 2000 witnesses a sad anniversary. On that day in 1900, and on the following days through to 4 May, there took place a sale by auction of "The costly collection of modern engineers' tools, plant and machinery by well-known makers' Maudslay, Sons & Field. The auction by Messrs. Farebrother, Ellis, Egerton, Breach & Co. Took place on the premises of Maudslay's Marine Engine Works, Lambeth, at 110 Westminster Bridge Road, at Maudslay's Mews Burdett Street, and at Maudslay's Wharf, Belvedere Road." The title page of the catalogue of the auction specified also 'a 50-ton wrought iron boiler trolley, six powerful cart-horses, ten coal wagons, single horse van, spring cart, and a quantity of brass-mounted harness, some beautifully-made working models of marine machinery, 600 tons of wrought and cast iron floor plates, office and board room furniture…'
