Sleeman's analysis of offensive and defensive torpedo warfare during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877 to 1878 includes a description of the Russian's successful spar torpedo attack on the Turkish monitor Duba Saife and the unsuccessful Whitehead torpedo attack on several Turkish ships at anchor in the harbour of Batoum on the 20th of December 1877 which resulted in the Turks gaining possession of two Whitehead torpedoes one of which was in perfect working order.
