- Abstract
Mr. Jeffers chief of the American Bureau of Ordnance reported that very little progress on movable torpedoes had been made in the past year. The station, Lay, and Ericsson torpedoes had been sent to the Centennial Exhibition as part of the naval exhibit. Captain Ericsson had improved his torpedo with the intention of increasing its speed, and further trials were to be made with it in the spring. Mr. Lay's torpedo had achieved a little more than one-half of the desired speed of twelve knots, and the Whitehead torpedo had been accurately launched at speeds of eighteen knots in smooth water for a distance of 200 yards.
