Officially described as a swift protected cruiser the most interesting feature of the torpedo depot ship H.M.S. Vulcan (length 373ft. Overall, 350ft. Between perpendiculars, beam 58ft., draught 22ft.) was the lifting gear constructed by Sir William G. Armstrong and Co. Of Elswick for the six second-class torpedo boats, countermining launches, and steam pinnace she carried.
