- Abstract
The Oberon torpedo [mine] experiments had prompted a serious discussion in the correspondence columns of the Times. Two gentlemen writing under the titles of "Vigilans" and "Investigator" had taken opposing views concerning the propriety of conducting such experiments. "Vigilans" insisted that they could only do harm by teaching possible enemies how best to assail Britain's warships; while "Investigator" held that the information derived from them more than repaid any losses to Germany, Russia, or France. The Editor agreed with "Investigator" that the experiments should be carried out, but went further, supporting "Vigilans" by stating that the information acquired should be kept secret. Ellis #147.
