Lieutenant-Commander W. H. Emory, of the United States Navy, commanding the Petrel of the Asiatic Squadron had written a number of letters to his professional friends in which he described the battle of Yaloo River, and the conclusions that he had drawn from his examination of several of the ships involved, after the battle.
