The Paris correspondent of the Standard reported that a new torpedo boat for submarine warfare had been laid down at Toulon on the 30th of April 1887. Built on the plans of M. Zede, a retired French Navy constructor the Gymnote was launched in mid-September 1888, the whole operation being carried out in the strictest privacy.
