Abstract

Two novelties were exhibited at the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, in the United States during the 1879 practical examinations for officers undergoing instruction in torpedo work. The first was the electrically controlled steam launch Success, and the second, was Lay's controlled torpedo, which started off at a speed of six miles per hour, travelled a distance of 300 yards, slowed down, and then sank.
