Produced by the Intelligence Department of the United States Navy The Year's Naval Progress: Annual of the Office of Naval Intelligence. Government Printing Office, Washington, 1891, this large octavo volume of 491 pages, was admirably illustrated and indexed. It contained eleven papers. (1) Notes on Ships and Torpedo Boats. (2) Notes on Machinery. (3) Notes on Ordnance. (4) Electricity on Shipboard. (5) The Naval Manoeuvres of 1890. (6) The Armour Question of 1891. (7) The Coast Defence Systems of Europe. (8) Service High Explosives. (9) The Torpedo Vessel: a History of its Development. (10) The System of Promotion in Several European Navies. (11) Some Standard Books on Professional Subjects. Produced by the Intelligence Department of the United States Navy there was no equivalent available to the general reader or English naval officers.
