Abstract of Patent No. 63, granted to R. Paulson, Langwith, Notts., submitted January 1, 1884, accepted December 30, 1884, for: 'The torpedo is propelled by means of a liquefied or compressed carbonic acid gas, or other suitable compressed gas which is carried by the torpedo, and is employed, in a similar manner to steam, in an ejector to force water, which is used to propel the torpedo. The torpedo is steered in a direct course by means of a magnetic needle making contacts on any deviation. When the needle comes under the influence of the attraction of an iron mass, it is automatically short-circuited by a second needle. The depth at which the torpedo is propelled is regulated by means of the pressure of the water on a flexible diaphragm connected by levers and links to horizontal pins.'
