Abstract

'A company of seven in the Electricity, including Mr. Courtenay, managing director of the Storage Company, Mr. Simpson, representative of Messrs. Siemens, Mr. Thornton, and others; a company of eight in the Australia with Mr. Stephens, Lieutenant Robinson, R.N., H.M.S. Vernon, Mr. A. Reckenzaum, started from Millwall at 1.55 on Saturday last, arriving at Charing Cross at 2.32, the Australia leading. The Reckenzaum motor on board the Australia took a current of 37 amperes with 100 volts. The Siemens motor propelling the Electricity consumed 47 amperes with 80 volts, but the accumulators of the Electricity were heavier than those on the Australia. The boats returned to Charing Cross at 2.40, made two stoppages of about ten minutes each, and arrived at Greenwich pier at 4.10 p.m. Both launches cruised about until six o'clock, when they were docked at Millwall on the Storage Company's wharf. The proceedings were very successful, and the whole party, consisting of some twenty-four gentlemen, some of whom were on the steam launch, expressed their admiration and congratulations. The cost of the Australia complete is 200l.'
