During the years 1879 and 1880 John I. Thornycroft had conducted a number of experiments with guide-blade and other propellers, using models of small dimensions. These models indicated that there were some advantages to be gained by using guide-blade propellers, and his firm had built a shallow water steamer with a hull specially formed for their use.
