Abstract

One of Captain McEvoy's inventions, viz., his "single main system," which had been adopted by several foreign governments was a system of harbour or coast defence in which the whole of a group of moored torpedoes [mines] communicated with the station on shore by a single electric conductor. Along this they continually telegraphed evidence of being afloat and in working order, and upon any one being struck by a ship it gave immediate notice of the fact to an observer on shore, who could if he thought fit, instantaneously detonate that mine without any time being spent in preliminary adjustments. Further, each torpedo could be electrically isolated from the rest, and then tested so that the continuity of the electrical connexions could be established, or it could be detonated at will.
