- Abstract
Further illustrations of some of the exhibits of the United States Navy Department at the Philadelphia Exhibition, namely an engine and boiler of the type used for steam cutters 33 ft. long 8 ft. 7 in. beam and 3 ft 9.5 in. in depth. This engine designed by Chief Engineer Charles H. Loring, U.S.N. in 1870, and had a single cylinder 6 in. in diameter, with a 6 in. stroke, the cylinder being cast in one piece with the frame and bedplate. The boiler was a vertical tubular one with 151 tubes 1 in. diameter in outside diameter and 26 in. in length.
