- Abstract
'…though extreme speed is not the purport of this note - some of your readers may be surprised to know I have lately had a twin screw boat built on a novel design. She is 40 ft. long 7ft. beam, draws 9 in. water forward and 18 in. aft, when running in full trim, carrying comfortably from 20 to 30 persons, and a ton of coal sufficient for a week's work, 10 hours a day. Her speed with 90 lb. of steam is nine miles an hour, the twin screws are each three bladed 21 in. diameter, and are driven by two small (very small) cylinder independent engines. The boiler with the pendulous tubes, which I have found to be a first-class one for small boats, makes and holds steam rapidly and well, gives no trouble, and moreover never primes.'
