- Abstract
- 'Old Screw' requests information on the diameter, the pitch, the number of blades, and the working pressure of the Ariel's boiler (John I. Thornycroft supplied the following details in reply: the Ariel's three bladed propeller was 26 in. in diameter, had a mean pitch of 3 ft. 6 in., and each blade had a surface area of 82 square inches, the boiler pressure was between 100 to 120 pounds per square inch, but equally good results had been obtained with a pressure of 90 pounds per square inch.).
