- Abstract
"Prior to the recent great war, submarine navigation had never developed beyond an initial stage. But the idea of attacking an enemy's ship from under water can be traced through the Middle Ages right away back to classical times. The forms of attack may be roughly divided into three: Individual attack by divers without any apparatus. Individual attack by divers provided with some primitive contrivance for the supply of air while under water. Attack by submarine boats. Accession No.1648 'A new torpedo, Mr Just's new invention.' The Age (Melbourne), 26 September 1895, p. 5. The details of Just's patent were kept secret at the time. However, an Age reporter did see a set of working drawings and his article was based on these.
