- Abstract
The author discusses the five core submarine capabilities and the military tasks emerging from the UK's Strategic Defence Review (SDR) and then uses the Navy's Strategic Defence Plan headings to discuss today's capabilities versus tomorrow's potential. "Today's submarine is in transition. It has emerged from its early rather narrow strike role into a multi-role platform. Stealth and reach give submarines a primacy in deterrence, maritime battle space preparation and if the RN sustains its technological lead, underwater dominance, sea denial and utility across the full range of crisis reactions. The submarine is the platform of least risk both diplomatically and from a force protection perspective and therefore the vehicle of choice early in a crisis."
