Abstract

"This weapon was produced during the 1960s for the French Navy as part of a family of torpedoes designed initially to meet domestic requirements for anti-surface vessel (E series) and anti-submarine weapons (L series). The E14 was designed to replace the Z12, E12 and Z16 torpedoes. The E 14 was initially developed by Alcatel (Societe Alsacienne de Constructions Atomiques de Telecommunications et d'Electronoque) later renamed CIT-Alcatel and finally Sintra-Alcatel. Subsequently responsibility for developing French torpedoes was transferred to the DCN (Direction de Constructions Navales) later renamed DCN International with manufacture the responsibility of ECAN (Establissment de Constructiions et Armes Navales), Saint Tropez. This is both a surface ship - submarine launched heavyweight torpedo primarily designed for use against surface ships. However, it may also be used against noisy submarine targets, which are close to the surface. It has the same geometry and mechanical features as the L3 and was designed for as great a degree as possible of commonality with that weapon."
