- Abstract
"The UK Ministry of Defence is considering options for a follow-on Submarine Launched Underwater Weapon (SLUW) to succeed the current Spearfish heavyweight torpedo in Royal Navy (RN) service from the middle of the next decade. BAE Systems handed over the last Spearfish on the 24th of November from a Main Production Order (MPO) and combined In-Service Support contract placed in December 1994. Spearfish was originally developed to counter the Cold War threat posed by fast, deep-diving Soviet nuclear attack submarines with the first deliveries to the RN starting in 1988." AccessionNo.1274. Scott, R. 'Spain considers combat system options for S-80A submarine.' Jane's Defence Weekly, vol. 40, issue 24, 17 December 2003, pp. 30-32. "Rival companies bidding to supply the combat system for the Spanish Navy's next generation S-80A diesel-electric submarine are arguing the merits of their individual solutions as the Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues to weigh up the political, operational and industrial factors that will shape its final decision. A request for tenders (RfT) was issued in February to: STN Atlas Electronik (now Atlas Electronik); Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace; Lockheed Martin NE & SS Undersea Systems (now part of the reorganised Maritime Systems and Sensors, or MS 2 , business); Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems; and UDS International. Bids were received on the 8th of March, a turnaround of just six weeks, with oral presentations following on the 20th of March. The five bidders were asked to quote on a fully integrated combat system solution including a multi-array sonar suite and associated processing functionality, a command-and-control module/using seven CONAM SUB multifunctional common consoles per shipset), and a weapon control subsystem."
