- Abstract
Sir John Biles believed that there were only two methods of defending battleships against submarine attack: the destruction of submarines by other vessels and the protection of the bottoms of battleships. The first method could not be undertaken by large vessels but was the job for ships of the same order of size as the submarine. The second method involved carrying additional armour.
