The destroyers Star and Fairy had three funnels, and were almost identical in appearance. For ease of identification all destroyers in the instructional flotillas were clearly numbered on the bow. To reduce the numbers in use, the numbers on some vessels were painted on a white diamond; a vessel so marked would be known as "Number 3 Diamond" etc.
