It was reported in the Morning Post and Daily Chronicle on the 18th of July, 1899, that the destroyer Fairy was unable to take part in the forthcoming manoeuvres because she had sprung a leak in two if not three tubes in one boiler, however, she was able to do an easy 23 knots on the steam supplied by the three remaining boilers.
