- Abstract
A draft of the French Naval Budget for 1899 published in Le Temps in November 1898 provided for the construction of the first-class cruiser Guichen, the second-class cruiser Protest, and the torpedo boat destroyers Dunois, Hallebarde, and Fauconneau. Accession No.545. 'Torpedo boats for the United States Navy.' The Engineer, vol. 86, 9 December 1898, pp. 560-561 and 563. The continuation of: 'Torpedo boat destroyers for the United States Navy.' The Engineer, vol. 86, 21 October 1808, pp. 390-392. The dimensions of torpedo boats No. 24 to No. 35 authorised under the Act of the 4th of June 1898 varied somewhat from class to class, the basic dimensions were to be: length 175 feet, beam 17 feet, displacement 150 to 170 tons on their trial trip, including an allowance of 9 tons for ordnance, 10 tons for coal, and 8 tons for the crew and stores. Each boat was to be propelled by twin screws driven by 3,000 indicated horsepower 14-inch by 22-inch by 25 and a quarter inch (2) by 18-inch stroke inverted-vertical triple-expansion double-acting marine engines operating at 350 revolutions per minute with steam supplied by two water-tube boilers.
