- Abstract
An accident occurred on board the torpedo boat destroyer Desperate during a cruise off Harwich in early July 1898, when a tube of one of her water-tube boilers burst, scalding three stockers who were on duty in the boiler-room at the time. The injured stockers were taken to Sheerness where they were hospitalised. The Desperate continued the cruise after the engine-room staff had plugged the defect in the boiler tube.
