The Superior Council of the Marine approached the Chamber of Deputies for a supplementary grant of 80 million francs to be included in their budget to permit the construction of one battleship, two armoured cruisers, two coast defence cruisers, and nine 85-ton torpedo boats for coastal service. All of these vessels were to be completed by 1902.
