Abstract

The official trial of the first of six sea-going torpedo boats (length 152 feet 6 inches, beam 15 feet 3 inches) fitted with 2,000 indicated horsepower triple-expansion marine engines built by Yarrow and Company, Poplar, for the Chilean Government took place on the 16th of December 1896. The mean speed achieved during six runs on the measured mile was 26.803 knots, and the mean speed for the three-hour trial was 26.797 knots, carrying a load of 25 tons. The guaranteed speed was 25.5 knots.
