In response to a request from the Admiralty dockyard officials at Devonport carried out a series steaming tests similar to those conducted on the torpedo gunboat Sharpshooter in September 1895 on the torpedo gunboat Spanker fitted with Du Temple boilers to assess the relative merits of the Du Temple and Bellville water-tube boilers.
