Abstract

A German class S 1-41 torpedo boat on the way from Wilhelmshaven to Kiel capsized in heavy seas on the 28th of August 1895. Only three crew members out of a total compliment of sixteen survived. The S 1-41 class boats were all built at Elbing and varied in displacement from 85 to 87 tons, in length from 121 to 128 feet, and in speed from 19 to 22 knots. With engines of only 1,000 indicated horsepower, and a coal capacity of 17 tons they were clearly not designed for anything other than ordinary sea conditions.
