A series of trials involving nine Spanish torpedo boats and one torpedo boat catcher were carried out under direction of Don D. Segismundo Bermejo, the Director of the Spanish Torpedo School in April, May and June 1888. Working in groups of three the boats were tested for speed and manoeuvrability. The effect of steel projectiles from quick-firing guns on the hull and boiler of a torpedo boat was also assessed.
