- Abstract
Eight of the twenty-four boats taking part in the torpedo boat manoeuvres of Portland in 1887 were rendered hors de combat as soon as they were worked under wartime conditions. J I Thornycroft had built all of the vessels that had failed and their failure was largely due to their extremely lightweight construction. Yarrow built boats of the same dimensions were nearly seven tons heavier and faired much better.
