- Abstract
The armour-plated torpedo-ram Polyphemus steamed from Chatham to Portsmouth in September 1882. Although the Polyphemus's locomotive boilers were designed to work at 120 pounds per square inch it was decided that it was unsafe to operate the boilers at pressures in excess of 70 pounds per square inch.
