Abstract

Yarrow and Co., Poplar, introduced a new method of steering their torpedo boats by fitting a drop rudder forward, worked in conjunction with the usual rudder aft. Turning circles: after rudder alone, port half-speed, 178 yards, time taken 2 minutes 20 seconds; after rudder alone, starboard half-speed 178 yards, time taken 2 minutes 6 seconds; after rudder alone, port full-speed, 214 yards, time taken 2 minutes 13 seconds; both rudders, port half-speed 94 yards, time taken 1 minute 46 seconds; both rudders, starboard half-speed 103 yards, time taken 1 minute 41 seconds; both rudders starboard full-speed 120 yards, time taken 1 minute 23 seconds; both rudders, port full-speed 94 yards, time taken 1 minute 18 seconds.
